What is a Compact Keyboard? A Complete Guide

Compact keyboards are trending up. But what's so special about their smaller size? And why should you consider switching your full-size keyboard for one? In this guide, we explain what compact keyboards are, their benefits and drawbacks, and why you might want to make the switch.

What Is a Compact Keyboard?

A compact keyboard is similar to a standard laptop keyboard, but comes without a numerical keypad, arrow keys or function row, reducing the overall width and height of the keyboard.

A common “compact” layout is about 60% of a standard keyboard size, or smaller. However, there is a 65% version of the compact keyboard that retains the arrow keys and a few navigation keys, and a “tenkeyless” version that just removes the numeric keypad.

On a compact keyboard, the keys are around the same size as a standard keyboard, as its compactness is achieved by omitting the numpad and other non-essential keys, rather than shrinking individual key sizes. This means there is a familiar tactile feedback.

Compact keyboards use a feature called function layers to access keys that are otherwise missing. This works by toggling programmable “layers” on the keyboard, such as holding down the function key (fn) to access volume controls, adjust screen brightness, or switch between screens.

The Benefits of a Compact Keyboard

The design of a compact keyboard encourages ergonomic, fast and efficient typing. It also encourages users to keep their mouse closer to the keyboard, reducing the need to reach and strain. Here’s our take on the top benefits of using a compact keyboard over a standard one.

1. Less Movement

The smaller the keyboard, the closer you can have your mouse to it. Thus, compact keyboards require far less movement to use. This creates a better load on the shoulder, arm, wrist and hand, leading to less physical discomfort and pain.

2. Same Function, Smaller Size

And this doesn’t mean less function! A 60% keyboard offers all the functionality of a standard keyboard, without the bulk.

Compact keyboards also take up less space on your desk (by as much as 40%). And while all keyboards can be considered portable, a compact one is far more portable than a standard-size one. This makes them popular with digital nomads and remote workers, as well as those who prefer a neat and minimalistic setup

3. Compatible with External Numeric Keyboard

Only 10% of computer users use the numeric part on a keyboard. However, if you are one of the 10% who need to regularly enter numbers, a separate numeric keyboard can be used in conjunction with a compact keyboard. So you can have easier access to a conventional numpad, without forgoing the benefits of an ergonomic keyboard.

The Drawbacks of a Compact Keyboard

Switching to a compact keyboard may require an adjustment period. After all, most of us have spent our whole lives using a full-size QWERTY keyboard! Be prepared to give yourself the time to adapt to the new layout, and don’t give up — you’ll be a whizz on your new keyboard in no time at all.

The other potential setback is that. if you often use the numeric keypad, you might struggle without it. However, as touched on above, a separate numeric keyboard can be used in conjunction with a compact keyboard to help you maintain good ergonomics and be able to use the Numpad.

FAQs

Are Compact Keyboards More Ergonomic?

Yes, compact keyboards encourage a more natural wrist and shoulder position by reducing the distance your hands need to travel, which can help prevent repetitive strain injuries caused by poor posture.

Can I Use a Compact Keyboard for Gaming?

Yes, compact keyboards can be used for gaming! They are most popular with those who play FPS (first-person shooter) games, as they allow for greater mouse movement.

However, some gamers may prefer a tenkeyless layout or a full-size keyboard for additional macro keys, depending on their game and setup of choice.

Are Compact Keyboards Better?

Compact keyboards can be considered "better" depending on your needs. If you would benefit from better ergonomics, more efficient typing, a faster WPM, and more space on your desk, a compact keyboard would be worth the investment.
